Skateboarding was born in Southern California and Oceanside has embraced a “skateboarding is not a crime,” mentality around the sport by creating a city-wide network of dedicated, safe skateparks around town, including at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, Melba Bishop Park and Recreation Center, John Landes Park, Libby Lake Park, and Alex Road Skate Park, a 22,000 square foot skater’s paradise, designed by famed firm Grindline, and established with the help of a $25,000 grant from the Tony Hawk Foundation. Visitors to Oceanside can register for lessons from the Parks and Recreation department, and buy boards at Asylum Skate Shop, just a three-minute walk from The Seabird Resort, or any number of skate shops around town.
